Pattern with paper: Paper-weaving, exploring colour interaction, pattern and composition inspired by textile artist Anni Albers.
Explore the wonderful work of textiles artist Anni Albers, and discover her use of colour and pattern. Look at the abstract quality to her work and her use of bold coloured lines and shapes. For inspiration, take a look at her work here.
You will need:
Lots of strips of pre-cut coloured paper. You could paint some a4 sheets of paper or use ribbons if you have them. I have used approximately 1cm wide strips and 2cm wide strips.
Ruler
Scissors
Pencil
Masking tape
Pictures mount board frame. If you don't have this, a cereal box could be used by cutting a small rectangular frame in the centre.
Tips:
For strips of paper you could use magazines pages, newspaper, wrapping paper and even old envelopes (these sometimes have great patterns inside!).
How to make:
To create your weaving board, make the warp by placing eight thin strips of paper over the frame from top to bottom and securing with masking tape.
Now you are ready to weave, pull the strips of paper over and under the slots to make the weft. Be sure to pull the paper over and under alternate slots with each new layer.
Once your weave is complete use a ruler and pencil as a guide to mark where to cut the ends of the paper strips on your frame to make sure they don't poke out the sides of the frame. Secure the woven paper to the side of your frame with masking tape and then turn over to display your weave!
